Shop at Khan Al Khalili - The worlds oldest market
Khan Al Khalili, or more affectionately known as the Khan, it is the oldest market place in the world and perhaps one of the biggest. In Arabic it’s the Khan a Souk Sharkiat, or the road of markets. But the Khan is more than just a road, it’s a city within the city, surrounded with some of the most famous mosques in the world, it is situated in what is known as the Islamic quarter in the eastern part of the city, it is a maze of small alleys and streets that are lined with craftsmen, business men and wholesalers. In the 14th century, this area was outside of Cairo proper and a favorite spot for the caravans and traders to stop and do business at the same time resting in the middle of their long journeys. It eventually grew into a Turkish type bizarre and finally into what it is today, a globally recognized place of business. But be careful because it is still easy to become disoriented in its maze of small streets, but the sounds and smells of this hustling bustling place will leave their mark on you forever, its an exotic and intoxicating place to visit. Bargain on perfumes, incenses, gold, silver, galabayas or blown glass, leather, ivory, mother of pearl boxes and much more, or just sit and relax while you drink a mint tea with a shisha pipe in one hand and watch others haggle a price. Its an experience you will never forget, that is a promise. |
